Bangkok Day 5
We have become lazy, as you do when on holiday. Today we cleaned all our clothes (we actually hand-washed them to save some money) because dry-cleaning some t-shirts is pointless. Then we hung out by the pool and got ourselves a decent tan. I did some reading about Taiwan's history and also brushed up my understanding of asian culture, in preparation of our second culture shock of the journey.
Rant of the day:
1. Good service is one thing, but this country is over the top when it comes to hotels and restaurants. A waiter jumps on you every thirty seconds to ask if everything is alright. Today, during dinner my glass was empty for a total of 23 seconds before someone came rushing over to offer me a new drink. This was after i had been informed that my glass was getting empty when i had about a quarter of my beer left. The plates are also cleaned away way too quickly as there are about 2 waiters to every customer and they all wanna make sure they do enough to get in on the tip. Speaking of tips, its nuts how the waiters actually remind you they would like a tip. They give you the bill, smile and say something like "Remember something little for me". Thats the kind of thing that makes me not want to give a tip :(
2. The smell of the city: Someone is constantly cooking something within 50m of you. which makes the whole city smell of food combined with pollution. This combined with the heat makes for one crazy smell. Every morning when we walk out of the hotel we jokingly say "aaaaah... smells like bangkok!". And then we are hit by the heatwave.
Bonus of the day:
Good weather and an excellent dinner. The steam room is good. Still loving air-con.
Tomorrow i think we are gonna do the packing and maybe head out for a walkabout. Then its off to Kuala Lumpur to meet Emma and Svena!

1 Comments:
One more smell to add to your list: jasmine. That was my first impression of Bangkok back when I visited the first time - jasmine, and fumes of course.
Khao San is insane, I agree! Then picture Khao San + 50.000 people running about spraying each other with water and mud. Four days in a row, non-stop. That't the water festival for you, but it takes place in april so I guess you'll miss it.
As Ludacris would say: Bang cock in Bangkok! And as the Swedes would say, as I do now: have it so good! Vi hörs,
